Real Madrid vs RB Leipzig Football Match Score 15 Sept 2022

Champions League opener last week, Real Madrid are set to host RB Leipzig at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu on Wednesday night. Carlo Ancelotti’s side grabbed a 4-1 comeback win on home soil against Real Mallorca on Sunday and they remain top of the LaLiga Santander table with 15 points, having managed five wins from five games. As for RB Leipzig, they suffered a humiliating 4-1 home defeat to Shakhtar Donetsk last week before being thrashed at the hands of Europa League winners Eintracht Frankfurt on Saturday.

Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti says he will not tell Vinicius Jr to tone down his style of play after incidents in La Liga at the weekend. The forward argued with Real Mallorca players and their coach Javier Aguirre during a 4-1 win for Madrid. Ancelotti could be seen telling the Brazilian to calm down, but played down the issue before the Champions League match at home to RB Leipzig. “I’m not deaf and I’m not stupid, I can hear what is being said but this isn’t a topic for us or for Vinicius. He has extraordinary quality and it’s normal that opponents try to stop him in his tracks and the rules of the game are there to protect all players, not just Vinicius.”

Vinicius, 22, has scored in his past five matches in all competitions, and Madrid are in good form heading into the Leipzig game. The reigning European champions have won all five of their domestic fixtures to lead La Liga, and won 3-0 at Celtic last week in their opening Group F game. Leipzig endured a humbling 4-1 home defeat by Shakhtar Donetsk on the same night, which led to coach Domenico Tedesco being sacked the next day. However, they have made a flying start to life under successor Marco Rose, who oversaw a 3-0 win over Borussia Dortmund in the Bundesliga on Saturday in his first game in charge.

Karim Benzema’s injury in the UEFA Champions League clash against Celtic was seen as a major worry for Real Madrid given the lack of a natural backup in the No. 9 role at Carlo Ancelotti’s disposal.

However, the performance earlier today against RCD Mallorca in La Liga will have eased a lot of nerves among the fanbase. Without Benzema on board, Los Blancos thrashed their visitors 4-1, riding on the brilliance of Vinicius Junior, Rodrygo Goes and Federico Valverde.

Eden Hazard had started as the No. 9 in Benzema’s absence after scoring against Celtic. However, the Belgian did not have the most effective outing on Sunday afternoon. Following his substitution, Rodrygo moved into the centre-forward slot and sparked things into life.

The Brazilian was brilliant playing through the middle as he set Vinicius up for a goal before scoring one himself with a brilliant strike.

Following his performance, MARCA (h/t Madrid Zone) is now reporting that Ancelotti has decided to start Rodrygo as the No. 9 ahead of Eden Hazard when Real Madrid face RB Leipzig in the Champions League next week.

With Rodrygo moving into a central role, Ancelotti plans to deploy Valverde out on the right flank against the Bundesliga giants. And Vinicius is a permanent fixture on the left flank, given his form and importance to the team.

Ancelotti praised Rodrygo’s performance playing through the middle against Mallorca, saying: “In the second half we did better when Rodrygo was striker, he combined well with Vinicius.”

So, unless something changes in the next couple of days, it seems like Real Madrid will line up with the attacking trident of Valverde, Rodrygo and Vinicius against RB Leipzig, with Hazard dropping down to the bench.

The trio was on target on Sunday afternoon and Madridistas will hope for them to carry on in the same vein of form in Europe.
